Ryan Bertrand is an active duty Law Enforcement Officer with the Sioux City, IA Police Department.
Ryan is currently serving as the Senior Crimes Against Persons Detective. He is presently a member of the SWAT team and is the department’s Head Defensive Tactics Instructor. He has received numerous commendations from his department including two Exceptional Duty awards (2007, 2008) and in 2009 received the Chief’s Commendation Award.
Beyond providing training to his own department members and the department’s SWAT team, Ryan has also provided training to numerous military and law enforcement agency members who have attended training at the National Training Center in Sioux City, IA.
Ryan is the co-owner of Systema Midwest-Combat Academy where he provides instruction in Russian Martial Art (Systema), MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), and Military/SWAT tailored combatives courses. Through this channel, Ryan has provided Low-Light and Gun-fighting training to numerous Sheriff’s Departments and Defensive Tactics training to private sector security personnel.
Ryan’s background includes service in the United States Marine Corps (Amphibious Assault) with operational experience in Mogadishu, Somalia (Operation Restore Hope). He comes from wrestling/grappling background, and has been involved in ground fighting and combative work for nearly 20 years. Since 2003, Ryan has studied and practiced Russian Martial Art (Systema) under various Senior Systema Instructors. In 2009, Ryan received Systema Instructor status from Vladimir Vasiliev, co-founder of Russian Martial Art.
